Matthew Southerland has been a Policy Analyst for Security and Foreign Affairs at the Commission since 2013. He previously was a research associate at Defense Group Inc. Prior to that, he worked as a research assistant at the RAND Corporation. He researches cross-Strait relations and Chinese military affairs, among other topics. Matthew graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Georgetown University and a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Maryland. He studied Mandarin Chinese in Beijing and Taipei, including at the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University and is fluent in the language.
