The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday, February 2 and Friday, February 3 on Major Internal Challenges Facing the Chinese Leadership

The hearing will examine the key challenges Chinese leaders confront, how those challenges manifest themselves in a growing frequency of civil unrest and public protests, how China’s state bureaucracies are responding to the protests, and what are the strategic implications for the United States in light of the challenges facing China.

The Commission is seeking to better understand the trajectory of Chinese political and economic development in view of China’s many domestic challenges, the nature and extent of those challenges, their current and projected effects on the Chinese population and the population’s reaction to them, the methods employed by the Chinese government to maintain and restore social order, and the potential for externalization of problems. The Commission also seeks to identify appropriate U.S. policy responses in view of the evolving economic and political developments in China.

The Commission will hear from Mr. James Keith, the State Department’s Senior Advisor for East Asia and Pacific Affairs, and Mr. Jerry Clifford, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Deputy Assistant Administrator for International Affairs. Also testifying will be several experts that have served in senior national security positions within the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. These include Dr. Flynt Leverett, former senior director for Middle East Affairs at the National Security Council , now with the Brookings Institution, and Dr. Albert Keidel, former Deputy Director for the Office of East Asian Nations at the U.S. Department of the Treasury who now is with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace .
