U.S.-CHINA COMMISSION ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN AND VICE CHAIRMAN TO LEAD ITS 2010 REPORT CYCLE
Washington, D.C. – The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission elected a Chairman and Vice Chairman to lead its efforts during 2010 to assess the national security implications of trade and economic ties between the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
The Commission elected Daniel M. Slane as its Chairman for the 2010 term. Mr. Slane was reappointed on December 10, 2009 by House Republican Leader John Boehner for a second two-year term expiring December 31, 2011. Mr. Slane is the founder and co-owner of the Slane Company, whose principal businesses include real estate development, lumber, furniture, waste treatment, telecommunications, energy, and medical treatment for cancer tumors. Mr. Slane has extensive international business experience, including operating a business in China. Mr. Slane served two years on active duty as a U.S. Army Captain in Military Intelligence. He served for a number of years as a Case Officer with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He worked in the White House under President Gerald R. Ford. The Commission elected Carolyn Bartholomew as its Vice Chairman for the 2010 term. Ms. Bartholomew was reappointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi on December 16, 2009 to a fifth term expiring December 31, 2011. She previously served as the Commission Chairman for the 2007 and 2009 report cycles, and served as Vice Chairman for the 2006 and 2008 report cycles. Ms. Bartholomew worked at senior levels in the U.S. Congress, serving as Counsel, Legislative Director, and Chief of Staff to U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. She also served as a Professional Staff Member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Previously, she was a legislative assistant to then-U.S. Representative Bill Richardson. The chairman and vice chairman positions alternate each year between Commissioners appointed by Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders.

The Commission released its unanimous 2009 Report to Congress on November 19, 2009. To gain information to be reflected in its next report, the Commission plans to hold a series of public hearings on a broad array of topics within its legislative mandate, continuing its examination of the implications and impacts of U.S.-China trade and investment. Once finalized in January, the full 2010 schedule of hearings will be posted at www.uscc.gov.
