The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday, September 10, 2009 on “China’s Media and Information Controls - The Impact in China and the United States.” The hearing will be held at 8:15 am in Room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, located at First Street and Constitution Avenues, NE, Washington DC, 20510
The September 10 hearing will examine the status of China’s commitments to greater media reforms, coverage of sensitive news stories in Chinese news media including Charter ’08 and the Global Financial Crisis, and information technology and freedom of expression in China.
Scheduled to testify on September 10 are Mr. Phelim Kine, Asia Researcher at the Human Rights Watch; Ms. Madeline Earp, Asia Research Associate at the Committee to protect Journalists; Dr. Victor Shih, Assistant Professor of Politics at Northwestern University; Dr. Perry Link, Professor of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages at the University of California; Mr. Lawrence Liu, Senior Counsel at the Congressional-Executive Commission on China; Mr. Robert Guerra, Project Director for Internet Freedom at the Freedom House; and Dr. Robert Faris, Research Director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University .
