The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 on “The Impact of China’s Economic and Security Interests in Continental Asia on the United States.” The hearing will be held at 9:15 am in Room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, located at First Street and Constitution Avenues, NE, Washington DC, 20510
The May 20 hearing will examine China’s interests in Afghanistan and Pakistan and their impact on the United States, how Continental Asia factors into China’s global energy strategy, and China’s trade and investment in the region.
Scheduled to testify on May 20 are Dr. Michael Schiffer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia at the U.S. Department of Defense; Mr. Abraham M. Denmark, Fellow at the Center for a New American Security; Dr. Walid Phares, Director of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Future of Terrorism Project; Ms. Lisa Curtis, Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation; Ms. Julia Nanay, Senior Director for Country Strategies at PFC Energy; Dr. Stephen J. Blank, Research Professor of National Security Affairs at the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College; Mr. Dan Twining, Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund; and Dr. Martin Spechler, Professor of Economics at Indiana University-Purdue University.
