The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 on Access to Information in the People’s Republic of China. The hearing will be held in Room 385 of the Russell Senate Office Building, located at Delaware & Constitution Avenues, NE, Washington, DC 20510.
The hearing will examine the nature and extent of government information control in the People’s Republic of China, and will consider topics including the background, functioning, and current status of the Government’s information control mechanisms; recent cases were these mechanisms have been utilized; ways in which the government’s use of these mechanisms may be altered during the 2008 Olympic Games; and the impact that these mechanisms have on US-China relations. In this hearing, the Commission will also explore the relationship between Chinese information controls and the safety of food and products originating or manufactured in China.
The Commission will hear from members of Congress including Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida, Congressman Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan, and Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia. Representatives of the Administration, policy experts and academic scholars also will testify on the issues detailed above.
