U.S. - CHINA COMMISSION TO RELEASE 2007 REPORT TO CONGRESS Report Cites Troubling Trends for U.S. Economic and National Security Interests; Offers Numerous Recommendations for Congressional Action

The United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), a bipartisan Commission established by Congress in 2000 to investigate, analyze and provide recommendations to Congress on the economic and national security implications of the U.S.–China relationship, today announced that it will release its 2007 Report to Congress at a press conference to be held Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 10:30 am in Room 385 of the Russell Senate Office Bldg.  The Report will highlight the USCC’s conclusions and recommendations about the direction of U.S.–China relations.  Among the topics it addresses are:

  • China’s proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and other weapons (including dual use technologies), and actions the United States might take to encourage China to stop proliferating
  • The transfer of U.S. high technology, manufacturing, and research and development  activities to China, and the impact of such transfers on U.S. national security
  • China’s effect on world energy supplies and how the United States can influence China’s energy policy
  • China’s military modernization and force deployments
  • China’s regional activities and strategy with respect to India and Taiwan, and the implications for the United States
  • China’s compliance with its accession agreement to the World Trade Organization
  • China’s restrictions on access to information and on free speech by its citizens, and the economic and security implications for the United States.

The Commission’s Chairman and Vice Chairman will review the Commission’s findings and recommendations.
