The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday and Friday, June 14-15, 2007 on China’s Energy Consumption and Opportunities for U.S.-China Cooperation to Address the Effects of China’s Energy Use. The hearing will be held in Room 385 of the Russell Senate Office Building, located at Delaware & Constitution Avenues, NE, Washington, DC 2051.
The hearing will examine the trends and impact of China’s energy consumption; the strategic and environmental consequences of that energy use for China, the United States, and the world; strategies for addressing these effects; and current and possible future U.S.-China cooperative programs on energy and the environment.
On June 14, the Commission will focus on the energy consumption patterns of China and its strategic and environmental impacts. To better understand this issue, the Commission will hear from members of Congress. The Commission will hear testimony from Karen Harbert, Assistant Secretary of Energy for Policy and International Affairs, and Judith E. Ayres, Assistant Administrator for International Affairs at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Furthermore, policy experts and academic scholars will testify on Chinese energy consumption patterns and trends, as well as the strategic and environmental effects of China’s energy use.
On June 15, the hearing will continue with an examination of strategies for addressing the effects of China’s energy consumption and opportunities for U.S. China cooperation. In the morning, the Commission will hear testimony from Governor Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, and Governor Brian Schweitzer, of Montana, on their energy cooperation with China. Mr. David Helvey, Country Director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, at the U.S. Department of Defense will testify on the strategic impact of China’s energy policy and consumption.
