The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday and Friday, March 29-30, 2007 on China’s Military Modernization and Its Impact on the United States and the Asia-Pacific. The hearing will be held in Room 562 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, First Street and Constitution Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20510.
This hearing will examine China’s capacity to wage war in traditional and non-traditional ways. These include propaganda directed at foreign populations, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) cyber warfare operations, PLA doctrines and tactics aimed at undermining the technological edge of adversaries (including newly-demonstrated anti-satellite capabilities), and the ways in which recent PLA modernization has affected the military balance across the Taiwan Strait.
On March 29, the Commission will focus on China’s preparations for conducting irregular forms of warfare, traditional forms of warfare, and the military balance across the Taiwan Strait. To better understand these issues, the Commission will hear from members of Congress, General James E. Cartwright – Commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, and policy experts and academic scholars who have closely followed, studied, and written or spoken on these topics.
On March 30, the hearing will continue with an examination of information warfare, cyber operations, and other disruptive asymmetric capabilities being developed by the PLA. Additionally, Chinese space programs and their bearing on regional and world-wide security issues will be explored.
