Federal Register Notice (PDF)

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday and Friday, February 1-2, 2007 on The U.S.-China Relationship: Economics and Security in Perspective. The hearing will be held in Room 562 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, First Street and Constitution Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20510.

The hearing will examine U.S.-China relations from multiple perspectives to assess this bilateral relationship since the granting of permanent normalized trade relations to China, and the challenges facing the relationship in 2007.  It will consider the economic, security, and diplomatic impacts of China’s accession to the World Trade Organization, and seek to identify trends in U.S.-China relations and opportunities for greater bilateral cooperation and dialogue.

On February 1, the Commission will focus on the overall nature of U.S.-China relations and particularly economic and trade relations.  To better understand this issue, the Commission will hear from members of Congress, Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Richard Lawless, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Energy Cooperation David Pumphrey.  Additionally, policy experts and academic scholars will discuss the successes and failures of U.S.-China relations in the past five years, as well as the impact on the U.S. economy of China’s development since its accession to the WTO.

On February 2, the hearing will continue with an examination of the U.S.-China military and security relationship and the prospects for U.S.-China political cooperation and diplomacy.  The Commission will hear testimony from Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Thomas Christensen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Treasury for Asia International Affairs Robert Dohner, as well as scholars and policy experts.
