The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will conduct a public hearing on September 14, 2006 on China’s Proliferation to North Korea and Iran, and Its Role in Addressing the Nuclear and Missile Situations in Both Nations. The hearing will be held in Room 385 of the Russell Senate Office Building, Delaware & Constitution Avenues, NE, Washington, DC 20510.
The hearing will assess China’s proliferation record with respect to North Korea and Iran and will evaluate the impact of China’s relationship with these two countries on international nonproliferation efforts and U.S. interests and security. It also will consider China’s bilateral and multilateral actions to address North Korea’s and Iran’s nuclear weapons initiatives and missile development.
To better understand these matters, the Commission will hear from members of Congress, Assistant Secretary of State Paula DeSutter, and Assistant Secretary of Defense Peter W. Rodman. Additionally, policy experts and academic scholars will discuss the political context surrounding China’s proliferation to North Korea and Iran and its role in efforts to resolve the challenges posed by both nations’ nuclear weapons and missile development programs.
