The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will hold a public hearing on July 21 and 22, 2005 , in Washington, D.C. to consider China's Growing Global Influence: Objectives and Strategies. This hearing will examine the changing face of Chinese diplomacy and Beijing's approaches diplomatic, economic and military and objectives in its relationships around the globe. The hearing will also assess China's growing energy demand and how China approaches certain regions of the world to satisfy demand. These topics are particularly timely given recent efforts by the Chinese government controlled firm CNOOC to purchase U.S. petroleum producer UNOCAL.
The Commission is seeking to better understand what China's economic influence, growing energy needs, and increasingly proactive foreign policy means for U.S. policymakers. During this hearing the Commission will hear testimony from Congressional, Administration [invited], and non-governmental witnesses. Witnesses have been invited to address the mechanisms and methods used by China and its firms to further their interests in Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Central, South, and East Asia, in particular.
The Commission will hear from members of Congress, including Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), and has invited representatives of the Administration. The Commission will also hear from experts that have served in both the Department of State or Defense Department. These include Randall Schriver, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs , former Ambassadors Princeton Lyman and David Shinn, and Dan Blumenthal, former senior director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia at the Department of Defense. These witnesses will join a distinguished group of academic and think tank experts to discuss these important topics.
