The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission will hold a public hearing on June 23, 2005 , in Washington, D.C. to consider U.S.-China Trade Impacts on the U.S. Defense Industrial Base. The hearing will examine the health of key defense related industries. Globalized commercial industries are shaping the technologies used for our national defense. As China becomes a stronger player in the globalization game, it is important for the U.S. to understand what role China will play in shaping our defense environment.
Congressman Donald A. Manzullo (R-IL), Chairman of the House Small Business Committee will lead off the hearing. The Commission will then hear testimony from Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Peter Lichtenbaum and Dr. William Schneider, President of International Planning Services, Inc. Two afternoon panels will address the defense industrial base and U.S.-China trade and investment issues in six key defense industries -- aerospace, information technology, manufacturing technology, specialty metals, semiconductors, and shipbuilding. Pierre Chao and James Lewis of CSIS, Paul Freedenberg of the Association for Manufacturing Technology, Jack Shilling of Allegheny Technologies, William Howard, Defense Science Board Task Force on High Performance Microchip Supply, and Amy Praeger of the American Shipbuilding Association will testify.
