The US-China Economic and Security Review
Commission will hold a public hearing on September 23, 2004,
in Akron, Ohio to assess The Impact of U.S.-China Trade
and Investment on Key Manufacturing Sectors. This investigation
will examine first-hand how the U.S.-China trade and investment
relationship is affecting the industrial base of Ohio and
the neighboring region, and how this may be indicative of
broader trends for the U.S. manufacturing base.
The U.S.-China economic relationship is being felt strongly
in the U.S. automobile, auto parts, rubber, steel, glassware
and ceramics, and machine tool industries. The Commission
will take testimony from industry and labor representatives
and analysts of these varied industrial sectors regarding
the extent to which U.S. trade and investment with China
is playing a role in the dynamics and short- and long-term
economic health of these industries.
The hearing will conclude with a discussion on the economic
development and other community impacts of U.S-China economic
relations and an open microphone session where interested
members of the public can voice their views. Registration
for the open microphone session begins at 8:30 am.
