China as an Emerging Regional and Technology Power: Implications for U.S. Economic and Security Interests

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission has released an agenda for its two-day field investigation on February 12 & 13, 2004, in San Diego, California, to examine China's rise as a regional economic power and center for high-technology trade and development. This investigation will cover such issues as U.S.-China trade in high-tech goods and services, China's regional relations, and the implications for the U.S. and the Pacific region science and technology community. The Commission seeks to gain a better understanding of the shift of high-tech production to China and China's compliance with intellectual property rights agreements.

The Commission will hear from various high-tech industry representatives. In addition, scholars from the University of California system will speak on the trends in the Chinese economy and China's trade and investment ties with its neighbors.

The February 12th portion of this event will be broadcast live via the Internet on the Commission's website at www.USCC.gov. The Internet video broadcast begins at 9:00 am. The broadcast ends at 5:00pm.
