What: U.S. - CHINA COMMISSION TO HOLD HEARING ON IMPACT OF CHINAS ACCESSION TO WTO
This is the Commissions third hearing examining the impact of Chinas accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The purpose is to assess Chinas ability to comply with its WTO commitments, to explore areas where the U.S. can help China meet these commitments, and to examine the impact of WTO accession on U.S.-China trade.
Commissioners will hear panelists views on the impact of Chinas accession to WTO on their industry, important lessons learned from relations with China to date, and recommendations for resolving compliance problems outside the WTO dispute settlement process. Government and private sector witnesses will discuss the record to date and their outlook for the future.
Testifying will be Administration witnesses and leading trade experts from the entertainment, financial, and communications sectors, including the Motion Picture Industry Association of America.
The marketing and distribution of entertainment products such as sound recordings, videos, books, and magazines face obstacles to market access as well as intellectual property rights (IPR) violations. The U.S. financial services industry also has had little access to the China market.
The U.S. - China Commission is a permanent twelve-member bipartisan commission of private citizens created by Congress in October 2000. By statute, the members are appointed by the Congressional leadership and provide a broad range of expertise from business, labor, government and academia. The Commissions primary role is to monitor, investigate and report to Congress on the implications for U.S. national security posed by our bilateral trade, economic and financial relationship with China.
The Commission will provide a report to the Congress by June 2002 on its findings along with recommendations, if any, for legislative or executive action.
