Dr. Donald E. Weatherbee

Donald E. Weatherbee is the Donald S. Russell Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina where he specialized in the politics and international relations of Southeast Asia.  An honors graduate of Bates College, he holds an MA and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

In addition to the University of South Carolina, Prof. Weatherbee has taught at Wilson College, and the University of Rhode Island. Prof. Weatherbee spent three years at the U.S. Army War College, 1974-1977, as the Henry L. Stimson Professor and was awarded the Army’s Distinguished Civilian Service award for his work on the post-Vietnam war profile of Southeast Asia “guiding senior army planners in the redefinition of United States national strategy.” He has also taught at Gajah Mada University in Indonesia, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, University Kebangsaan in Malaysia, and the Free University of Berlin. He has held major research grants at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies in Bangkok. He has lectured at and consulted with official and academic institutions throughout Southeast Asia.   In 2004, Prof. Weatherbee was the Fulbright-Sycip Distinguished Lecturer in American Studies in the Philippines. 

Prof. Weatherbee is past-president of the Southeastern Conference of the Association of Asian Studies, past editor for Southeast Asia of Asian Affairs, past member of the editorial board of Asian Survey, and past member of the Contemporary Affairs Committee of the Asia Society. He is currently on the Board of Advisors of the United States – Indonesian Society, a director of the American – Indonesian Cultural and Educational Foundation, and a participant in the Columbia University Southeast Asia Seminar. He continues as a consultant to public and private agencies with Southeast Asian interests.

Prof. Weatherbee has a lengthy publications record beginning with his first monograph, Ideology in Indonesia: Sukarno’s Indonesian Revolution (1966).  His most recent books are International Relations in Southeast Asia: The Struggle for Autonomy, revised second edition (2008) and Historical Dictionary of United States – Southeast Asian Relations (2008).  Other recent major publications include the book chapters “ASEAN’s Identity Crisis ” in Legacy of Engagement in Southeast Asia (2008); “Political Change in Southeast Asia: Challenges for U.S. Strategy” in Strategic Asia 2007-2008;  “Southeast Asia in 2006: Déjà vu All Over Again” in Southeast Asian Affairs 2007;  “Strategic Dimensions of Economic Interdependence in Southeast Asia,” in Strategic Asia 2006-2007; and “Indonesian Foreign Policy: A Wounded Phoenix,” in Southeast Asian Affairs 2005;
