
Dr. Judy Polumbaum

Judy Polumbaum is a professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at The University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she has taught since 1989. Her research focuses on journalism and media in mainland China. She has worked as a newspaper reporter in Vermont, California and Oregon. She taught journalism at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences postgraduate school from 1979-80 and worked as a writer and editor for the national English-language publication China Daily during its first year of publication from 1981-82.
She has a bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies from McGill University, a master’s degree from Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and a doctorate in Communication from Stanford University. Her recent book China Ink: The Changing Face of Chinese Journalism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), based on interviews with 20 young Chinese journalists.
