Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor with the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he specializes in transnational security issues and the international politics of East Asia (with particular emphasis on the People’s Republic of China). He is author of The Terrorism Ahead: Confronting Transnational Violence in the 21st Century (M.E. Sharpe, 2007). His edited books include Human Smuggling: Chinese Migrant Trafficking and the Challenge to America’s Immigration Tradition (Center for Strategic and International Studies, 1997) and Terrorism and Violence in Southeast Asia: Transnational Challenges to States and Regional Stability (M.E. Sharpe, 2004). He has published articles in such journals as Asian Affairs: an American Review, Contemporary Southeast Asia, Fletcher Forum of World Affairs, Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict, Harvard Asia-Pacific Review, Jane’s Intelligence Review, Orbis, Parameters and Survival. He holds a B.A. from Washington and Lee University, an M.A. from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and his J.D. and PhD degrees from the University of Hawai’i, at Manoa.
