Daniel M. Hartnett is a China analyst in CNA’s China Studies division. Mr. Hartnett began his career as a Russian and Serbo-Croatian linguist in the U.S. Army, covering the civil war in Bosnia for several years. He also worked for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration as a China advisor during nuclear nonproliferation negotiations between Washington and Beijing. Since joining CNA, Mr. Hartnett has researched various issues related to the Chinese military, such as training issues, operational-level doctrine, and its military strategy. An accomplished linguist, Mr. Hartnett has attended several language schools, including the Defense Language Institute (Monterey, CA), the Sprachen und Dolmetscher Institute (Munich, Germany), and the Beijing Language and Culture University (Beijing, China). He holds an MA in Asian Studies from the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University and a BA in Chinese from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is currently studying towards his PhD in political science at George Mason University. Mr. Hartnett’s current research interests include China’s security and military affairs.
