Allen Carlson
Professor of Political Science
Cornell University

Allen Carlson is an associate professor, and Director of Undergraduate Studies, in Cornell University’s Government Department. He received his undergraduate degree from Colby College and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University in 2000. His research interests include International relations theory, security studies and Chinese foreign policy. Professor Carlson is the author of Unifying China, Integrating with the World: Securing Chinese Sovereignty During the Reform Era (Stanford University Press, 2005). The book contends that the Chinese position on sovereignty is not what it used to be; it has shifted in unexpected ways due to the unintended consequences of Deng Xiaoping’s reform and opening policy, and such a development has fundamentally altered the relationship between China and the rest of the world. He also recently co-edited (with J.J. Suh and Peter Katzenstein) Rethinking Security in East Asia: Power, Identity and Efficiencies (Stanford University Press, 2004). In addition, he has published articles in the Journal of Contemporary China and Pacific Affairs. During the 2004-2005 academic year, Professor Carlson was a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellow in China, affiliated with Peking University’s School for International Studies. He is currently working on a new research project that examines China’s “rise” and the future of U.S.-China relations from the perspective of non-traditional security issues
