Opening Statement of Larry M. Wortzel, Chairman
August 4, 2006
Washington, D.C.
Welcome to the second day of our hearing entitled China’s Role in the World: Is China a Responsible Stakeholder? Yesterday, we heard testimony from experts about China’s diplomacy around the world and its participation in international organizations. Today, we focus on a key issue in China’s foreign policy—energy, which is also an issue with the potential for disagreement and friction between China and the United States. I’d like to thank our speakers for coming today and I look forward to your testimony. We are especially pleased that the U.S. Department of Energy is participating in the hearing, and we look forward to Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Kathy Fredriksen’s testimony. I’ll now turn the microphone over to the Commission’s Vice-Chairman, Carolyn Bartholomew.
