Stephen S. Roach
Stephen S. Roach is Managing Director and Chief Economist of Morgan Stanley, a leading global financial services firm. In this role, he oversees the Firm's highly-regarded team of economists located in New York, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Mr. Roach has been widely recognized as one of Wall Street's most influential economists. He is currently on the Institutional Investor All-American and Global Research Teams. In recent years, he was named as the most widely read analyst in the world by First Call, the largest electronic distributor of Wall Street research.
Mr. Roach's published research has covered a broad range of topics, with recent emphasis on globalization, corporate restructuring, productivity, and the macro paybacks of information technology. He is widely quoted in the financial press and other media, and his work has appeared in academic journals, books, congressional testimony, and on the op-ed pages of The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. He has also served on many national and international commissions, most recently as a member of the Commission on the Future International Financial Architecture, set up under the auspices of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Roach has traveled extensively in China, especially in the past four years. He has played an active role in shaping the debate on China, both within China and from the external vantage point of the broader international community. He has been a keynote speaker at many important Chinese conferences in recent years, including the China Development Forum sponsored by the State Council, The 21st Century Forum sponsored by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and The Forum on Social Security Reform sponsored by the Development Research Center of the State Council. He recently sponsored an investor tour to China, exposing many prominent Western fund managers to their in-depth look at China.
Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 1982, Mr. Roach was Vice President for Economic Analysis for the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in New York. He also served on the research staff of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. from 1972-79 where he supervised the preparation of the official Federal Reserve projections of the U.S. economy. He has also been a research fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Roach holds a Ph.D. in economics from New York University and a Bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin.
