Gary Gereffi

Gary Gereffi
Director of the Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness Duke University

Dr. Gary Gereffi is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Globalization, Governance, and Competitiveness at Duke University. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. degree from Yale University.

Dr. Gereffi's research interests deal with social and environmental certification in global industries, the competitive strategies of global firms, and industrial upgrading in East Asia and Latin America. His major ongoing research projects are: (1) industrial upgrading in East Asia, North America, and Eastern Europe/Central Asia; (2) a book on global consolidation, using a global value chains perspective; and (3) analyzing the competitiveness of North Carolina industries in the global economy.

Dr. Gereffi has published extensively on globalization and development. His books include: Manufacturing Miracles: Paths of Industrialization in Latin America and East Asia (Princeton University Press, 1990); Commodity Chains and Global Capitalism (Praeger Publishers, 1994); Free Trade and Uneven Development: The North American Apparel Industry after NAFTA (Temple University Press, 2002); and Latin America in the 21st Century: Toward a New Sociopolitical Matrix (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2003).
