Chief Executive Officer, FutureGen Alliance Inc.

Prior to being named the CEO of the FutureGen Alliance, Mike spent his professional career with American Electric Power, Inc., mostly focused on coal-fired generation  

During his over 30 years with AEP, he was involved in the design, construction, start-up, and operation of large coal fired power plants, and several Clean Coal Technology Demonstration Projects, including the Project Manager for the 70-MW Tidd PFBC Demonstration Plant.

Mr. Mudd was also a developer in the non-regulated utility business, responsible for the development of cogeneration projects in the US and Canada and IPP projects in Mexico, after which Mr. Mudd returned to the R&D arena, here he was responsible for corporate R&D associated with energy supply technologies including coal, gas, nuclear, and renewable energy technologies as the Manager Technology Development.  Mike played a key role in the analysis that led to AEP’s decision to proceed with developing its IGCC projects.

In September 2006, Mike was named the Chief Executive Officer for the FutureGen Alliance, a non-profit corporation comprising of America’s largest electric utilities and coal companies that will partner with the U.S. DOE to design, construct and operate the world’s first near-zero emissions coal-based power plant.

He is active in several industry associations including participation in committees associated with the Coal Utilization Research Council, EPRI, the IEA Coal Industry Advisory Board, the National Coal Council, the National Academy, and the DOE Hydrogen Technical Advisory Committee. 

Mike has a Bachelor of Engineering Degree and with post-graduate studies from Stevens Institute of Technology, as well as the AEP Strategic Leadership Program at the Fischer College of Business at The Ohio State University.
