Dr. Jacqueline Newmyer
Senior Analyst: Long-Term Strategy Project
And Fellow: International Security Program at John F. Kennedy School of Government

Dr. Jacqueline Newmyer is a fellow in the International Security Program at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a senior analyst at the Long-Term Strategy Project, a Cambridge-based think tank affiliated with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) in Washington. Her research examines the strategic behavior of non-democratic regimes, with a particular focus on the People’s Republic of China. She recently completed a study of surprise attacks. Since 2002, Dr. Newmyer has been a consultant to the Office of Net Assessment in the Defense Department. From 2002-2004 she worked in the Strategic Assessment Center at SAIC. Her PhD dissertation, which she completed in 2005, compares seminal texts on strategy and statecraft from ancient China, the medieval Middle East, and early modern Europe. From 2005-2006, she was an Olin Fellow in National Security at Harvard. This fall, she created and co-taught a seminar called “Strategies of Tyrants” in the Government Department of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts & Sciences. The course examined the foreign and military policy of regimes with chronic domestic security concerns, drawing insights from ancient political philosophy as well as from contemporary political science. Newmyer’s work has appeared in the journal War in History, the New York Times, Policy Review, and The Weekly Standard, among other publications. Newmyer earned her BA, summa cum laude, in History and Literature from Harvard. Her master’s and doctorate are in Politics from Oxford.
