Chris Hankin
Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Trade Controls

Christopher G. Hankin, 53, currently serves as the Senior Director of Federal Affairs for Sun Microsystems, but will be testifying as a former government official and not as a representative of Sun.

Previously he spent 14 years in the US government, eight of those dealing with US export control policy. From 1988 to 1993, he served at the US State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Trade Controls. He remained at the State Department for one more year as the Senior Advisor for Trade Controls. During this time he developed and managed US policy on sensitive high-tech trade with the Soviet Union (and its successors), other Warsaw Pact countries, and China. In this capacity he also served as the lead US negotiator at COCOM (Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls), and was active in trying to constructively manage the UK-led effort to end COCOM.

From 1995-1997, Hankin staffed the Subcommittee on International Economic Policy and Trade for the House International Relations Committee. There he was involved in the battle to reenact the Export Administration Act.
