Randall Schriver

Randy Schriver is Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs responsible for the PRC, Taiwan, Mongolia, and Hong Kong. Prior to his current position with the East Asia Bureau, he served for nearly two years as Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor to Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. He joined the Department of State in March 2001 upon the swearing in of Deputy Secretary Armitage.

Immediately prior to his work at the Department of State, he was an independent consultant who worked on projects for Armitage Associates and SAIC. During that period he was also a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Prior to his work as a consultant, he served for four years in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) as a civil servant. As Senior Country Director for the PRC, Taiwan, and Mongolia in OSD from 1997 to 1998, he was the senior official responsible for the day-to-day management of U.S. bilateral relations with the People’s Liberation Army, and the bilateral security & military relationships with Taiwan.
Prior to his civilian service, he served as an active duty Navy Intelligence Officer for nearly three years (1989-91). After active duty, he served in the Navy Reserves for nine years (1991-2000).

His political experience includes service on the Bush-Cheney Defense Transition Team, and work on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign as a member of the Asia Policy Team. Previously he served in both the Washington and district offices of Representative Denny Smith (R-OR) where he worked on defense and military issues (1987).
