Research Interests:

Professor Hickey's research and teaching interests include International Relations, Asian Politics, National Security and American Foreign Policy. He has published 26 refereed articles in publications including Asian Affairs, Asian Survey, Asian Defense Journal, the Journal of East Asian Affairs, Issues and Studies, the Journal of Contemporary China, Orbis, Pacific Review, the Journal of Northeast Asian Studies and has contributed chapters in nine books. Professor Hickey has also published three books, The Armies of East Asia:  China, Taiwan, Japan and the Koreas (2001), Taiwan's Security in the Changing International System (1997) and U.S. - Taiwan Security Ties (1994).  In addition to these books and articles, Professor Hickey has contributed op-ed pieces to a number of newspapers including The Wall Street Journal, Taipei Times and Los Angeles Times.  He also has been interviewed by media organizations including China Central Television (CCTV), Cable News Network (CNN) and The Voice of America (VOA) and received external grant support from the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and the Pacific Cultural Foundation. In the area of service, Dr. Hickey has served as a consultant for a variety of governmental agencies, think-tanks and private firms and served as Director of the Graduate Program in International Affairs and Administration from 2000 to 2002.  In 1999, Dr. Hickey was selected by Southwest Missouri State University as a University Fellow in Research and he began a second term as University Fellow in August 2002.  Dr. Hickey has also received university and/or college awards for excellence in teaching (2001), research (1999 and 1997), service (2000) and the SMS Foundation Award for excellence in research in 2002. In 2002, Dr. Hickey was elected to the post of Coordinator of the American Political Science Association's Conference Group on Taiwan Studies. He began his term as Coordinator in September 2003.
